Sai Wan Hill is adjacent to the Lei Yue Mun Barracks, and that in turn is adjacent to the Lei Yue Mun Fort which overlooks the narrow channel leading into Victoria Harbour.

This key strategic location led to a fort and battery being built on Sai Wan Hill, with this being completed in 1903.

Hong Kong was invaded by the Japanese on the 8th December 1941 and they quickly broke through the defences in the hills above Kowloon, forcing British troops to withdraw to Hong Kong island by the 11th December

After a short siege, on the 18th December 1941 the Japanese troops landed on Hong Kong island between North Point and Shau Kei Wan. One group was tasked with taking the fort and the other was tasked with taking the Battery. Just 30 minutes after landing, the Japanese reached the Battery resulting in the deaths of 6 gunners and 20 prisoners.

Hi! I’ve been travelling since the 90's and have visited 48 countries - not many really when the world has over 240 countries and states.

I'm lucky in that I live abroad, so for me, even with COVID devastating the world, the travel experience hasn't really gone away. Anyway, I can't wait to share more of my experiences, drop me a message and I'll get back to you ASAP.
