This was the insignia of Hong Kong Police Force between 1969 and the 30 June 1997. According to the information panel, "In the aftermath of the 1967 riots, Queen Elizabeth II accorded the title "Royal" to both Hong Kong Police Force and Hong Kong Auxiliary Police Force for their excellent service and selfless contributions. The Queens crown, and the English word "Royal" was also added at the bottom.

The large one is a 7.92 mm Chinese Maxim Type 24 heavy machine gun which was used by the Japanese army during their occupation of Hong Kong 1941-1945. The smaller one is 6.5 mm Japanese light machine gun Taisho Type 11.

Patrick Donohue and George Hudson both died on board the tug Jeanette along with a number of troops. On 12th December a barge was filled with nine tons of dynamite, with fuses and detonators. Jeanette set off for the Central Star Ferry pier two hours earlier than scheduled. It was fired on by the machine gunners in pillbox 63 causing a huge explosion. On the 15th, Hopkins was killed by a bomb in the Central Police Station compound. Baker shot himself in the head in No. 3 Conduit Road. The original building is no longer there but the walls outside look to be the original. I won't go into the circumstances of all of them. Many more police died during the Battle for Hong Kong but the Chinese and Indian members don't get a mention.

The 'Sheung Shui Tiger' name as such after killing two policemen in Sheung Shui, in 1915. The tiger attack took place when the policemen were sent to subdue the beast after villagers spotted it in Sheung Shui. During the incident, Constable Ruttan Singh was killed at the scene by the tiger, while his colleague Ernest Goucher suffered grave wounds and died three days later. The tiger was eventually killed by Assistant Superintendent of Police Donald Burlingham. The bullet entry point can be seen on the tigers head.

A fascinating view of the past. Selected constables needed to be healthy, under 32 years of age, and have had 3 years of service. The contract period was 5 years with clothes and accommodation paid for. Passage and expenses was also included. Interestingly after 5 years there was a chance for contract renewal, sent home for free, or a generous 3 month gratuity. Not a bad pension either. Put into perspective, life expectancy records show that if you were male and born in the 1870s you could expect to live another 40 years. If you managed to survive childhood and were 10 in the same decade you could expect another 49 years of life.

Followed by Mount Gough, Morrison Hill, Victoria Peak, Possession Point, and lastly Kellet Island. Notice how far the coast has moved. Possession Point and Morrison Hill are far from the sea today, and Kellet Island is no longer an island.
