Rila Monastery

Rila Monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a magnificent example of Bulgarian Renaissance architecture. I used to think that it was named after a place but it is in fact the name of the hermit St Ivan of Rila during the years 876 - 946 AD. Is it worth a visit? 900,000 visitors in 2008 suggest it is.

The monastery complex can be divided in to three parts: a four storey residential area that encloses the central area and gives the monastery the appearance of a fortress from the outside, the oldest buildings - the Tower of Hrelja (1334–1335 AD) and oldest part of the complex, a small church alongside it (1343 AD), and the main church (1834 - 1837 AD). There is a lot of history touched by the complex; The Tower of Hrelja is named after a feaudal lord owing loyalty to Serbia but breaking away and recognising Byzantine authority. At this point Byzantium had started its last sad decline which would end in 1453 and finally consign the Roman Empire to history.

Positioned between Sofia and Bansko, the time to get to the Rila Monastery is about 90 minutes from each. An early start will make for a decent snooze to and from the Monastery while you are being driven there and possibly get you there before the hordes.

The Highlights

  1. Architectural beauty Bulgarian Renaissance and medieval architecture, the oldest being the 1334 Tower of Hrelja, a defensive structure in the monastery.
  2. Fantastic frescos glorifying Orthodox Christianity and what awaits if you stray from righteous path

The Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila

This visit to Rila came at the end of my visit to Bulgaria which was spent in the summer and winter resort of Bansko. A driver was arranged who would take us to the monastery, give us time to look around (but not enough) and then take us to our hotel in Sofia.

The Rila Monastery is in the mountains and from the outside resembles a fortress. It brings to mind a place that was built in dangerous times and actually at this time, being between the competing Serbian and Bulgarian kingdoms, with an unstable Byzantine Empire to the south, it probably was. The oldest structure is the tall defensive tower that takes the name of the strongman in charge at the time and who was responsible for the reconstruction of the the church and for the tower, The Tower of Hrelja. Like at Melnik, I failed to fully investigate the location before arriving and missed out on a number of sights and experiences, hence I missed seeing or entering the oldest, and to me most historically connected structures in the complex.

1) Entrance to the Rila Monastery
2) Rila Monastery and Tower of Hrelja
3) External frescos visible through the arches
4) Cooling off in the Rila Monastery
5) Beautiful frescos in the Rila Monastery
6) The fires of hell in the Rila Monastery
