Plovdiv

Founded in 342 BC and the Bulgaria's second-largest city, the museum town of Plovdiv is divided by the Maritsa River and contains both an old quarter and a new commercial section. The old part contains many buildings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries (and earlier) in typical National Revival style.

It is possible to wander along the narrow cobbled streets and see Roman ruins and other monuments for antiquity, picturesque medieval houses and 17th century buildings with their upper sections hanging out into the street and almost touching those opposite.

On the crusader route, Plovdiv has a long history, touched by the major events, people, and empires that have shaped Europe and beyond. It was in fact Alexander the Great's father, Phillip II of Macedon who conquered the Thracian city of Eumolpia, and renamed it Philippopolis which it remained for a long time.

The Highlights

  1. Roman theatre of Philippopolis one of the best preserved ancient Roman theatres in the world. Despite being located in the city centre, a hang over prevented me from finding it. So the photo accompanying this page is of a probable money laundering site.
  2. Stadium of Philippopolis one of the largest and best preserved Roman stadiums with a partially restored curved part.
  3. The Old Town with its medieval streets is known for almost every building being in Bulgarian Renaissance architectural style.
  4. Churches and mosques, the churches being distinctly Eastern Orthodox reflecting Byzantium, and the mosques being evidence of the former Ottoman rulers.

Bulgaria's cultural capital

Plovdiv may well be the cultural capital of Bulgaria yet this fact completely passed me by. Oh the folly of youth and (and revising this in 2023), a world without ubiquitous internet. While there is an abundance of attractive sights, and historically significant structures to marvel at, Plovdiv for me represented an air headed and totally oblivious wander through a cultural gem. Instead, we were more interested in finding lively night life which we failed to do.

What was actually most notable was our accommodation. Finding somewhere to stay was done a little differently to usual.

After speaking to an agency we were led to a respectable residential block near the middle of Plovdiv. After being led up we were introduced to an elderly lady. Thinking, "Great but now where are we staying?" we were brought into her flat and given a room next to her sitting room. Odd but very trusting as we were given full access to her home. She also didn't mind being woken late at night as we returned from the bars though we were very considerate and didn't return too late - probably because we couldn't find any bars that stayed open late.
