Loch Ness

Loch Ness

Surrounded in myth and exploited by legend, the spectacularly scenic Loch Ness is 23 miles long and is the biggest body of fresh water in Britain. It has been trawled for Nessie, the Loch Ness monster and although some large sonar echoes keep alive the mystery, no proof has been found of the monster. That doesn't stop the traders fleecing tourists with Nessie memorabilia though. If it isn't fantastic scenery and the monster you are after, a fair dose of tranquility can also be found despite the tourist hordes and if the weather is right, the hordes of midges.

No Nessie in sight

The west side of Loch Ness is the quick but also busy route. These photos of Loch Ness were taken from the east side. Urquhart castle is best seen from the west but we didn't have the chance to see it because of lack of time. It is perched on the edge of the Loch and is a dramatic site despite being just ruins. It was repeatedly sacked and damaged over the centuries but it came to be in the form it is now after being blown up in 1692 to prevent the Jacobites from using it.

As for Nessie, I did see a few ripples on the Loch, but no neck sticking out. Did I see evidence of the elusive monster?

Hi! I’ve been travelling since the 90's and have visited 48 countries - not many really when the world has over 240 countries and states.

I'm lucky in that I live abroad, so for me, even with COVID devastating the world, the travel experience hasn't really gone away. Anyway, I can't wait to share more of my experiences, drop me a message and I'll get back to you ASAP.
