If you enjoy making the great outdoors, you’ll love the Brecon Beacons. The summits and ridges soar in great green and yellow waves above the surrounding landscape. The views from the summits are exhilarating - once you manage to leave the crowds behind.

The high point is Pen-y-Fan at 886m but one of the laid out walks will take the walker to this and a number of peaks and ridges - you might even say special forces candidates putting themselves through the mill in preparation for selection. The best base towns are Brecon and Abergavenny but plenty of farms, camp and glamp sites, guest houses, and hotels offer good accommodation.

If walking isn't your game, then plenty of cycle routes - road, mountain and traffic free family routes - give a faster experience of the gorgeous countryside.

Trekking 'The Big One'

Leaflets from the visitor centres provide a set of different walks that cater for all abilities but we opted for 'The Big One'. This is an epic 11 mile circuit of the main summits and ridges of the central Brecon Beacons in a spectacular day's trek.

This begins and ends at a small wood on the A470, 8 miles south of Brecon. The route takes in Y Gyrn, Corn Du (873m), Pen-y-Fan (886m), Cribyn (795m), a descent and walk along the Neuadd reservoir before a taxing 200m climb following the ridge all the way back to the start point and if you fancy something spicy, a return to Brecon for some fine Indian dining.

1) On the way to the top of Y Gyrn
2) Brecon Beacons - At the top of Corn Du
3) From Corn Du to Pen-y-Fan
4) The Corn Du, Pen-y-Fan saddle
5) The wave like ridges of Brecon Beacons
6) Map like view of the topography
7) Towards the Neuadd reservoir
8) Brecon Beacons - A fine looking ridge

Hi! I’ve been travelling since the 90's and have visited 48 countries - not many really when the world has over 240 countries and states.

I'm lucky in that I live abroad, so for me, even with COVID devastating the world, the travel experience hasn't really gone away. Anyway, I can't wait to share more of my experiences, drop me a message and I'll get back to you ASAP.
