Ypres

Ypres is a small town town which although is ancient and in some places feels old, much of it is reconstructed. With it being located in a strategic position during World War I, several massively destructive battles were fought around this area, and over four years of warfare reduced the town to rubble. Munitions and other artifacts from the conflict still turn up in the fields which have reverted back to farmland.

The area is subject to battlefield tours which visit some of the surviving trenches and the museums and memorials that are dotted around. Ypres along with the names of the Somme and Verdun is synonymous with the slaughter that characterises World War I. After the war Ypres was rebuilt with the main square, town hall and Cloth Hall being rebuilt as close to the original designs as possible.

The Highlights

  1. The Menin Gate contains on stone panels the names of 54,395 Commonwealth soldiers who died in the Ypres sector but whose bodies have never been found. The memorial was too small to contain them all and these are missing are listed on other memorials.
  2. The 'old town' which though reconstructed, has been done faithfully and you would struggle to realise that the medieval looking buildings are not in fact medieval.

Ypres or British pronounced 'Wipers'

The aim of my first visit to Belgium was to see the scene of the opening battle of World War II on the Western Front, the Battle of Fort Eben Emael. This small but significant battle entered the annals of military history for its exemplary planning, execution, daring and innovation.

Ypres is a place I've always wanted to come to on a battlefield tour because in this relatively small area some of the major engagements and most intense battles of World War I took place. However, Eben Emael was the subject of this tour so the grim attractions of Ypres had to be put on hold for another time.

Hi! I’ve been travelling since the 90's and have visited 48 countries - not many really when the world has over 240 countries and states.

I'm lucky in that I live abroad, so for me, even with COVID devastating the world, the travel experience hasn't really gone away. Anyway, I can't wait to share more of my experiences, drop me a message and I'll get back to you ASAP.
