The Devil's Peak Redoubt was a key point to control in order to secure a potential crossing point across the narrowest part of the harbour. This view is from the Redoubt south to Hong Kong island. The fort which is now the Coastal Defence Museum can be seen in the centre of the photo overlooking the channel. It's covered now by a double peaked roof. The smaller hill to the left of the fort is Sai Wan Shan, on top of which is a battery and was stormed very soon after the Japanese came ashore. Mount Parker is the highest mountain that can be seen. These three were the objectives of the 2nd and 3rd battalions of the Japanese 229th Regiment. They came ashore just to the right and probably outside of the photo. The Japanese came ashore here at 21:38 on the 18th December and by the early hours of the 19th had accomplished all goals and had troops occupying Mount Parker, It is testimony to the ability of the Japanese troops who came ashore at night time, in poor visibility, in combat kit and could rapidly push inland over difficult terrain to take all objectives. This photo clearly shows the operational objectives of the invasion more vividly than by looking at a map.
