La Gomera, Canary Islands
A small volcanic island with a jungle climate at altitude but sunbaked lower down, La Gomera is pleasant alternative to the concrete towers, busy beaches and all day breakfasts that are normally associated with the Canary Islands.
San Sebastian is La Gomera's Capital and was home to Christopher Columbus while he prepared for his voyage of discovery of the America's. His 15th century home is now a museum open to the public.
10 Apr 2001 - La Gomera, Canary IslandsLa Gomera isn't a destination that you would specifically select for a holiday but it is definitely worth a day out if in one of the other Canary Islands. As I was already in Tenerife I was sold the prospect of a short boat trip and the chance to see the house that Columbus stayed in before his voyage of discovery in 1492. After the crowds of Tenerife, La Gomera is a tranquil place particularly when you escape the tour parties and explore the deserted narrow streets of the old capital, San Sebastian.
La Gomera is famous for its whistling language called Silbo. La Gomera is very hilly with lots of ravines communication was very difficult. As a result this whistling developed into a full language and the frequency allowed the sound to be transmitted over long distances. I actually got to witness a ‘conversation’ in the town as two sets of youths clicked and hooped at each other from across a square.
