New York, United States

They don't come any bigger than the Big Apple - king of the hill, top of the heap, New York, New York. No other city is arrogant enough to dub itself Capital of the World and no other city could carry it off. New York is a densely packed mass of humanity - 7.5 million people in 309 sq miles (800sq km).

In a city that is so much a part of the global subconscious, it's pretty hard to pick a few highlights - wherever you go you'll feel like you've been there before. For iconic value, you can't surpass the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Central Park and Times Square.

New York's famous hustle and bustle was abruptly cut short on 11 September 2001 when a terrorist attack in the form of two hijacked passenger aircraft razed the gleaming twin towers of the World Trade Centre. Thousands of people were killed in the worst terrorist act ever on US soil.

30 Jun 1997 - New York, United States

If I'm asked where I was when Mike Tyson took a couple of bites from Evander Holfield's ear I will always remember I was sorting out our accommodation in New York. On our first night we decided to battle the jet lag and went straight out on the beer. We did this till 2AM and then decided to retire for an early start even if it meant being tired the next day. Anyway, we woke up a mere 4 hours later feeling totally refreshed. Our watches said 7:30 and as we felt so refreshed we were all kicking ourselves over the waste of a day in bed as we thought it was the PM.

Instead of breakfast we began to get ready to go out and have dinner. As we were getting ready we noticed a lot of other people wandering around in sleeping clothes and taking a wash. Thinking nothing of this we carried on but it was getting strange as more and more people were washing, shaving etc. Is this some kind of American thing before going out we thought? We gradually started to suspect that it was actually 8AM and not 8PM so I had to have this confirmed when I asked a yank what time it was. When countered to his reply of 8 o clock I asked, 'AM or PM?', I got me a bizarre look and the yank must have been thinking 'dumbass limey's been on the drugs'. Strange thing is jet lag. Well, jet lag or not, we fought it and spent a couple of days ticking off the famous sights in the Big A. After this it was off to Washington DC.
