Munich

Despite all its sophistication, Munich retains a touch of provincialism that visitors find charming. In fact Muncheners even regard their ‘metropolis’ as little more than a Weltdorf, a world village. It's easy to see why, with lakes and the Alps on its doorstep and a fine collection of historic and cultural sites. During Oktoberfest representatives of the entire planet turn out to toast the town though when I was there it was predominantly Italians so if it's just sausage and beer you are interested in, look no further than Munich.

The Highlights

  1. Oktoberfest okay its only an annual event...so make sure you time your visit.
  2. Feldherrnhalle a one time Nazi shrine, the Field Marshall's Hall was a major location in the Nazi era. In archive photos you will see Hitler gathered here at the start of WW1.
  3. Tour of the city and include a visit to the church that holds the devil's footprint in the Frauenkirche.

Oktoberfest 2009

In major cities Germany it's hard to know just how old the buildings are because of the wide spread destruction wrought in World War II. Munich was completely rebuilt following a meticulous and - by comparison to other war ravaged German cities - rather conservative plan which preserved its prewar street grid. This is probably the reason why Munich is so charming as the buildings still retain a medieval look and feel though its possible that many are authentic recreations based upon old photographs, plans or drawings.

Authentic or not, the beer festival and the late summer sunshine makes Munich a fantastic place to visit in September/October.

1) Munich - Marienplatz
2) Munich - Karlstor, Karlsplatz
3) Munich - Roof ships along the Neuhauser Str
4) Munich - The Frauenkirche, the symbol of the Munich
5) Munich - Inside the Frauenkirche, the Devil's footprint
6) Munich - Der Alte Hof
7) Munich - The Residenz
8) Munich - The Feldherrnhalle in the Odeonplatz
9) Munich - Shirkers' Alley, behind the Odeonplatz
10) Munich - A rather unfortunate accident at the Oktoberfest
11) Munich - The Hofbrauhaus am Platzl

I'm lucky in that I live abroad, so for me, even with COVID devastating the world, the travel experience hasn't really gone away. Anyway, I can't wait to share more of my experiences, drop me a message and I'll get back to you ASAP.
