Granada

The Alhambra palace-fortress, dominating the Granada skyline from its hilltop perch, and the fascinating Albayzin, Granada's old Islamic quarter, also rising above the modern city, are highlights of a visit to Spain. Mind you, but for a French Napoleonic officer who disobeyed an order to destroy the building when the French left Granada we would only have ruins to admire today.

The palace is the true gem and is the most impressive Muslim building in Europe, with its perfectly proportioned rooms and courtyards, intricate stucco walls, beautiful tiling, and finely carved ceilings with geometric patterns. Arab inscriptions proliferate in the stucco work.

But there are more than monuments to this city: Granada boasts buzzing nightlife and excellent bars. Its setting, with the often snow-clad Sierra Nevada as backdrop, is magnificent, and its greenness a delight in often parched Andalucía.

The Alhambra

Although Granada has numerous points of interest, the purpose of my visit was to view the UNESCO world heritage site of The Alhambra which in itself takes the best part of a day to see. Some areas cannot be accessed without a ticket and only a limited number of these are available every day. In high season, either get there early or try pre-booking via the Alhambra website.

1) Alhambra, bath house sky lights
2) Alhambra, intricate carvings
3) Alhambra, Palacio de Carlos V
4) Alhambra, Puerta del vino
5) Granada cave dwellings
6) Alhambra, the citadel
7) Alhambra, outcrop of the citadel
8) Alhambra, Torre de la Vela
9) Sierra Nevada mountains
10) Muqarnas vaulting
11) Palacio de Comares - Patio of the Myrtles
12) Patio of the Arraynes / Myrtles
13) Palacio de los Leones
14) Carrera del Darro
15) Alhamba from the Albaicin
16) Albaicin and Mirador San Nicolas
17) Save the planet in Grenada!

Hi! I’ve been travelling since the 90's and have visited 48 countries - not many really when the world has over 240 countries and states.

I'm lucky in that I live abroad, so for me, even with COVID devastating the world, the travel experience hasn't really gone away. Anyway, I can't wait to share more of my experiences, drop me a message and I'll get back to you ASAP.
